Lesson 4, 5, and 6:

Aim: To create a pamphlet for our fellow Chinese and Dominican newcomers in high schools of New York City.

Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to acquire the basic components of designing and creating a pamphlet; work cooperatively with their partners; present their work orally to class.

Materials: computer with Internet access, Microsoft Word, notebooks, colored pencils, a digital camera, and a colored printer.

Do Now: What are the basic components of a pamphlet?

Instructional activities:

1. From the activity of Do Now, introduce the purpose, components, and design of a pamphlet.

2. Demonstrate how to use Microsoft Word to create a pamphlet: 3. Divide the class into pairs and assign each pair a different task to do on the computer:
    Pair 1: Design a cover page and create a table of contents.
    Pair 2: Form a dedication page and a preface.
    Pair 3: Design and type the list of 25 best tips selected by the students.
    Pair 4: Create pages of Misunderstanding No.1 and No.2. To do this, take out brief parts of the reports "Common Misunderstandings" written by their classmates or themselves and add a few illustrations.
    Pair 5: Create pages of Misunderstanding No.3 and No. 4. To do this, take out brief parts of the reports "Common Misunderstandings" written by their classmates or themselves and add a few illustrations.
    Pair 6: Take photos of the portraits drawn by the students with a digital camera. Create a page "About Us" with the photos of the students' portraits including their life facts provided by themselves.
4. Revise the writing to eliminate minimal errors of English grammar. See the Editing Checklist below.
5. Print the pages.
6. Present the pages to the class in pairs to collect suggestions.
7. With the suggestions, make improvement of the pages on the computers.
8. Print the pages for the final draft.
9. Assign students to write a letter to the school principal, Manhattan superintendent, and The New York Times on the Web's Learning Network to introduce their pamphlet "Beginnings for Our Fellow Chinese and Dominican Newcomers in High Schools of New York City".

10. Read the letters to the class, select the 3 best letters, and e-mail them to the superintendent's office, the school principal, and The New York Times on the Web's Learning Network http:/www.nytimes.com/learning 

Homework Assignments:
1. Who are you? Draw a portrait of yourself that shows your distinctive features. Briefly describe a few life facts about yourself.
2. Compose a letter to the school principal, Manhattan superintendent, and the New York Times on the Web's Learning Network to introduce your pamphlet.
